Great News—First Job!
THAT FIRST JOB IS A treasured memory: You reap true treasure and you always remember the lessons you learn. John K. of Tennessee received orientation for his first job on August 22. He is working at Walgreens, where he earns wages for such duties as janitorial tasks, stocking shelves, and assisting with unloading shipments.
John K., supported by Spectrum Support for the last two years, is an example of what can be done with trust, help, hope and caring. Best of luck on the new job, John. Hope you come by some worthwhile memories!
Progress!
THERE’S GOOD NEWS in Tennessee. Mariah Kurlick, RN, reports from the residential program:
Chandra is receiving such good care and sticking to her diet so effectively that her medications for renal disease have been decreased significantly. In addition, her psychiatric medications have been successfully simplified and may be discontinued. Desired weight loss has been one result of these changes, and Chandra is doing great!
Kevin was calm and cooperative during a recent doctor’s visit! Usually terrified of medical interventions, Kevin has been working on a desensitization program during Mariah’s home visits. The result was that Kevin sat rather than paced during the doctor’s appointment, allowed a full set of vital signs, and received a tetanus booster with minimal hand-holding. Thanks to Mariah, we are seeing a new person in Kevin! More Tennessee

Spectrum Support begins Supported Living Services!
In October of 2004, Spectrum Support, Inc. began providing supported living services for the first time in Tennessee, and we have plans to provide services for several new homes soon!
Supported living provides individually tailored services and supports enabling a person to live in his or her own home. A person living in the home may have up to 2 other housemates, so that quality focus and support can most effectively be provided for all residents. Flexible combinations of housing and support services are developed according to the concerns of each person living in the home. As a result, this residential option offers people vast access to personal choice in all aspects of their home-life, community participation, and recreational activities.
